Dear Friend,

Happy Easter Season!  New life, new beginnings, the season of spring is here!  It's a time when we remember that all things are possible and the most brilliant of rainbows come after the darkest of storms!

May we be a people of life, bringing the Good News everywhere we go!

Earth Day Ideas

April 22 is Earth Day!  Here are some ways to join the fun and be a part of the solution!

- Walk in the park and learn the names of local plants and trees, make botanical sketches or etchings of leaves.  Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife at the Quezon City Circle has a mini zoo where you can see rare wildlife that are being rehabilitated so they can be reintroduced into the wilds.

- Join the Firefly Brigade and other Earth Day activities all over the metro!  Click here

- A nice earth hour activity.  Make exciting light-writing pictures by using the setting on your camera for taking pictures of fireworks and then make motions to form words and symbols.  It will look like the picture.

- Gather your plastic bags and try this Earth friendly pet project!  Click here

- Find an advocacy that you are close to and volunteer for that cause.  Ex. If you want to save the hornbills, click here

Have Your Very Own Flower Festival

Flowers fill your home and garden with beauty beyond compare.  The sight of a field of flowers feeds our soul!  Emerson said "the earth breathes in flowers"!  Why not have a flower festival in your own home?

Picking what flowers, plants and trees you will put in your garden is not just a simple matter.  One must look at their adaptability to your space, not just how they will look.  For example, the Bougainvilla blooms best in sunny spots, not in the shade.

Just picture the soothing chirps and songs in the early morning and the delightful sight of bright flapping wings flitting from petal to petal.  If you want a garden that is truly alive, you need to pick plants that are endemic or native to the area.  Why is this so?  Because the native plants are the local insect's food and these will be the food for the birds, bees and butterflies you want to invite to your garden.  It also makes practical sense as it will all the more easily flourish.

The Philippines boasts of more than 6,000 endemic species so there is no lack of plants to choose from.  Some of the more popular flowers are the Sampaguita (our national flower), Ylang-Ylang, Waling-Waling, Gumamela and Everlasting.  Be sure to check if the flower you like will grow in your area.

Exotic species that are introduced to local soil have a tendency to encroach on the space of native species slowly wiping these out so you must be careful!  Using a variety of local plants, try to keep as diverse a mix as possible.
