Dear Friend,

The story of the Filipino people is truly unlike any other.  Unlike other nations whose fight for independence started through battles and proclamations, ours started with a painting.

Subtly veiled as happenstance in a Roman room, the painting "Spolarium" by Juan Luna was a statement against harsh colonialism. The painting's hidden meaning spread in the newspapers through Luna's friend Jose Rizal's speech when it won in a grand Madrid exposition.  News of the controversial painting then reached even the motherland Las Islas Filipinas.

We salute our nation's patriots for the independence they so dearly fought for and still to this day enjoy.  Happy Independence Day on June 12th!

We also wish all the fathers a very Happy Father's Day on June 20th!

Manila Attractions

Whenever a friend from abroad comes over, use this guide for taking them around!  Use them yourself for a "tour" of your own!

Intramuros - where the old Manila is.  Dress up in period costume and have a photo session!

Fort Santiago - a Spanish fortress once the port for spice traders going to Acapulco, Mexico.

Corregidor Island - also known as "the Rock" is a historical site for World War II.

Binondo - This may well be the oldest Chinatown in the world!  Have your fill of mooncakes and ride a kalesa!

Manila bay (Roxas Blvd) - walk along the bay during sunset for the best experience.

Coconut Palace (CCP Complex) - a guesthouse built with wood & shells too extravagant for Pope John Paul II to stay in. 

Chinese Cemetery (Aurora Blvd) - a "living" community thrives there.

American Cemetery (Fort Bonifacio Global City) - a place to rest (just for a while that is!)

Free Craft: Canhugger for Fathers Day


We found a perfect craft project for Dad's little helpers! 

Materials:
- foam or rubber (big enough to hug a mug or metal can)
- big stapler
- foam letters and designs (from papemelroti and other craft shops)
- white glue

Procedure:
- Simply staple together the foam so it forms a cylinder.
- Attach letters and designs using white glue to the foam so it reflects your dad's interests!

Have a Museum Month!

Take some time to step into the past!  Go with Dad!

For some, museums are a sleepy place filled with old things.  But in reality, museums are alive with mystery and discovery if only you know the stories behind each artifact displayed!  Visiting museums is definitely a fun way to greater learning!

The National Museum (Manila) is where you can find 16th century remains from a maritime battle, Philippine paleographs and a painting that spurred a revolution!  The museum has free entrance on Sundays. more info

 

The Casa Manila Museum (Manila) gives you a feel of the old Intramuros and the lives of the pre-war privileged class. more info  Also stop by nearby San Agustin Church Museum.

 

The Malacañang Museum is an interesting peek into the Philippine seat of government.  Photographs are allowed.  By appointment only more info

 

The Ayala Museum (Makati) focuses on art and history.  On April 15 - June 15, all teachers and school staff are entitled to a free admission to all of Ayala Museum's galleries. more info

 

Museo Pambata (Roxas Blvd) - is a hands-on discovery museum for children! more info

 

The Angono National Museum (Rizal) houses the oldest works of art in the country, some 3000 B.C. old Petroglyphs!  more info

 

Marikina City boasts of 4 small museums.  Naturally there is a Shoe Museum, which features the city's famed industry of shoemaking.  The others would very much interest young children: Doll Museum, Miniature Museum and Nativity Museum.  more info
