family is such a beautiful thing. Each one
different and in many ways the same.
When I was little, my
family would sometimes gather together and each
would pick one of us to draw. I would draw my
father, he would draw my mother, and so on.

Relationships are a work in progress. Even families can
drift apart due to changing life situations. Here are some
ways to ensure you stay together.
People - Look for breakthroughs in your family life
and celebrate these! Make like it is Thanksgiving every day by
shouting out your blessings to one another. Be generous with
your appreciation. Good grades in an exam?
Celebrate! Somebody won the game? Celebrate! Never
forget to applaud each other and celebrate each other's
Night - Traditions strengthen families. Whether it's
reading bedtime stories to the children or taking a vacation
every summer, each family should have and keep some. As the
children grow up, these traditions can evolve but still have meaning
and hold the family together. A family can also make a "new"
tradition such as "Games Night" where one day a week, the family
meets and just spends time playing card or board games. Simple
fun times like these can help build and bond
Lowlights - Sharing life's ups and downs gives family
members a way to care for one another. One family does this
every dinner time just to catch up on how everyone is doing.
For families with young children, this develops their communication
skills in an ideally supportive setting.
One - Children need to feel special and secure. A
parent spending an hour or so with one child can do wonders for
their self-esteem. Make sure that each child gets the same
quality time from each parent to build up a solid "friendship"
with each child. You can share a meal together or take a walk
in the park. This is not a time for scolding or giving
advice. It's a time to listen, relax and enjoy each other's
company. If possible, do this on a regular basis like once a
Statement - Frequent reading your family's mission
statement will help keep you on track. We already know it
and oftentimes live it but sometimes it's hard to put into
words. A family mission statement is just as important as a
personal one. If you don't know where to start, here's a free
online Mission Statement
Prayer - It's true. The family that prays
together, stays together. Perhaps you can start out by having
each one say
a simple thank you prayer for their blessing of the
day before the mealtime

your Business and Gifts: Working with Family (Part
Patricia Alejandro Paterno
A lot of people have told
me they didn’t want to work with their parents, for various
reasons. They couldn’t communicate. It was hard to
put a dividing line between what was a family concern, and
what was work. They overlapped and there was a lot of
friction and emotional investment.
It was difficult to have
your mom and dad as boss! You couldn’t escape them when
you went home! I guess we also experienced these
difficulties but the key to working with your family, or with
anybody, is really communication.
In one article, I said my
mom was like a leech. She won’t let go until you both
understand each other or at least agree to disagree. Up
to now, we have family meetings to iron out difficulties, and
sometimes there’s crying, but if you’re committed to each
other, you don’t give up. You continue to work things
Ever since we were young I
remember my mom painstakingly explaining things to us. We used
to call going to Korben (the name of our shop before
Papemelroti), going to Siberia, the prison camp. It got
so that my mom called us all together and asked if we still
wanted to continue with our business. Did we want to close
it? But we all agreed we wanted it to continue.
For my mom, family was first priority before the business
all the time.
In 1976, we put up the 1st
Papemelroti in Ali Mall. Papemelroti comes from our
names, patsy, peggy, meldy, robert
and tina. It started as a joke because we said that
Mommy and Daddy have Korben, we wanted our own. So although no
one could pronounce it, and people couldn’t remember the
spelling, we’ve survived.
People gave the store a
nickname - pape! As it was the summer vacation, we had a
grand time because the stores on the 2nd floor were also
manned by families. I was cashier, Peggy was selling,
Meldy made pillows, Robert painted eggheads and they sold like
hotcakes. By this time I was 20 and my youngest sister
Tina was 7 years old. She was in charge of wrapping and
because she couldn’t reach the counter, she had to wrap on the
floor. Of course our customers were amazed! We
came out in a women’s magazine and this helped our sales
for Thought: What things does your family like doing
together? Can you work at working together?
