Dear Friend,

King Solomon, in a dream, asked for wisdom from God and received it along with the other blessings.

Wisdom comes from the Hebrew root word "hkm".  It is described as "a discerning heart able to distinguish between right or wrong".

It holds a promise for a "fountain of life" for those who have it.  (Proverbs 16:22)  Given a choice between riches, power, honor or wisdom what would you choose?

"If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him." - Matthew 6:25

Join our Wisdom Pendant Contest!

We all need more wisdom in our lives.  This necklace holds symbols to remind us to seek after it.

The key is for taking hold of the advice of your parents and elders.  Guard them, for they are the key to life. (Proverbs 4:13)

The heart is to be guarded above all else for it determines the course of your life. (Proverbs 4:23)

Like a pearl is a wise reprover to a listening ear.  (Proverbs 25:12)

Glasses with 4 different sizes
Paper (from magazine, music sheets, newspaper etc.)
Cloth (pre-ironed)
Yarn or String

To Make:
1. Draw a circle 3" in diameter on a piece of cardboard.  Use a glass bottom as the guide.  You may vary the size depending on the size of your guides.

2. Cut out.  This will be your first pattern.

3. Make 3 other circle patterns with sizes 2" in diameter, then 1.5" and the last 1".

4. Cut the paper and cloth varying the mix of materials and colors using the patterns you made.

5. Attach the circles by using glue.  String together and hang.

Variation: Use other shapes like ovals or stars for more fun!

ECOrner: Try on Rainy Days

1. Save up your water in barrels or drums to use for watering the plants on drier days but make sure to cover up to prevent mosquitoes from breeding.  You can also use the water for cleaning.

2. Take advantage of the cool climate the rain brings.  Give the air conditioner a rest.

3. Cleanup all garbage surrounding your area.  Make sure gutters and drains are clear to prevent flooding.

4. Plant a tree!  Young trees often fall away to summer's intense heat so now is the time for them to have a greater chance of survival.

Volunteer Opp: Tutors Wanted

It's back to school for the He Cares Foundation scholars once again.  As the school year begins, more children need tutors.

Joana, one of our achievers asks "Can we have sessions every week?"

Sadly, the number of students grossly outnumber the number of tutors.  Sometimes there is a 4:1 ratio. The children don't learn much this way.

One does not have to be a teacher to volunteer.  The only qualification needed is for you to have graduated from Elementary School and for a positive attitude.  We mostly focus on English and Math.  It's okay if you cannot come every Saturday.

These children really need your attention.  They live as informal settlers across the metropolis.  The odds are against them.  They need you!

Sessions last for only 1 hour.  Schedules are Saturday afternoons starting 12:30 noon.  Held at the He Cares Foundation Center, 9 Mines St. Proj. 6, QC near Visayas Ave.

To volunteer contact calejbitsvyk@gmail.com today!

Reseller's Corner:

Finding your Business and Gifts: Starting Young (Part 2)
by Patricia Alejandro Paterno

Today we have 15 stores, a factory in Bulacan with apartments for our employees, and a nice building along Roces Ave., QC.  My mom will be the first to admit that she is utterly amazed at what her little hobby has grown into today.

She started with making stuffed toys, dolls in fancy dresses which she would display in the window. There wasn’t anything else in the store.  All her merchandise was in the display window, and the customers needed to ring the doorbell to get in. Sometimes I would help in the selling, sometimes my other sisters.

We did a lot of things together as a family - decoupage (the art of making paper seem like part of the wood) sculpting out of clay, making molds so we can reproduce the figurines.  One of our favorite stories was of my sister Meldy making her decoupage look so old by what is called distressing the wood.  She hammered, she pounded, made it almost black - and hers was the first to get sold!!!

My brother Robert would get black from antiquing figurines. So we were all taught the value of hard work early, and we would get paid for our work. I was paid 5 centavos to paint a figurine and could earn more than a peso for an afternoon of work which was plenty of money for somebody interested in buying candy from the sari-sari.

(To be continued)

Food for Thought: What activities can you and your children do together that would teach about the value of hard work?
