Environmental Marketing: Business is Expressing the Best in You (Part 1)

We started in 1968 with a little shop along Tomas Morato. Back then, it didn’t have many shops or restaurants. We lived on the second floor, and the first floor shop had a window full of stuffed toys, dolls and other items. It started as a hobby of my mom who loved to make things with her hands - she made stuffed toys from scrap cloth, Christmas décor out of eggshells, banks out of Clorox bottles, country dolls out of toilet paper rolls and felt, etc. When we were young, we used to go to the mountain or the beach and foray for twigs, weeds, or whatever, which she would fashion into wreaths, mobiles, flower arrangements. She still makes these things up to now.

Ever since we were young, my mom taught us by example to re-use what we could, to recycle, and of course to save on electricity and water and other resources.

In other words, she was the proverbial Visayan “kuripot”. Even today it is one of my mom’s greatest joys to make something out of things people would usually throw away. We still routinely salvage things usually thrown away and keep them until we find a use for it. So you could say that it was not a marketing strategy for us, but really a lifestyle. It is something we grew up with.

Our first shop was named KORBEN, from my parent’s names, Corit and Benny.  In 1976, when we put up a shop in Ali Mall, the first mall in Manila, we named it papemelroti after our names- Patsy, Peggy, Meldy, Robert and Tina.

Being in business is not just about making money, but it is an expression of yourself - what you believe in, what you want to share with others, your personality, and uniqueness. Ideally, your business should express the best of yourself.

There are three prevalent themes in our products and in the way we do things that reflect our culture and our vision: Christian, Filipino and Environmental.
